Kathryn was born on October 23, 1952, in Roseburg, Oregon to Wendell and Louise Austin. The family moved to Springfield, Oregon while Kathryn was still young. Kathryn attended Thurston High School (Class of 1970) and Lane Community College. She met her future husband, Kent, while in college and they married August 7, 1976.
Kathryn, Kent, and their youngest daughter, Jennifer, moved to Sparks in 1999. Kathryn began working at the America West Airlines Reno Reservation Center in October 1999.
